Problem: I have a program running in wine that works fine without desktop effects on, but fails miserabley with.

Idea: Disabling compiz for wine only.

Can anybody help me out with this?

Depends on what problems you mean. There is a "window rules" option. There you can select what windows to apply effects and such.

Similar problem- though not in wine. Apps that have you drag stuff, show thing moving, seem not to like compiz. i.e. Blender, TORCS, K3d, Google Earth. I just switch to no effects when I need those apps.

Well, if you want to turn it off quickly and I suggest Compiz Fusion Icon (http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/CompizFusionIcon) It's a fast way to switch between Metacity and Compiz.

sudo apt-get install compiz-fusion-icon

Thanks, although I cant seem to figure out window rules. Is there any straightforward way to disable compiz for a certain program or process? The button doesn't really help though- its not found as a package.

Edit- The package is fusion-icon

sudo apt-get install fusion-icon
