I bought a fax, wlan printer from brother and installed it on Windows with no problems. I tried to find a ubuntu driver on the brother web site but they only had mac and windows.
Almost gave up.
Searched ubuntu forums and web. Eventually found http://solutions.brother.com/linux/
with a driver but the instructions looked difficult (what is "cups", when to use "cups" and when "lpr"...)
Almost gave up again again.
As a last resort I leafed through my ubuntu book and read "In the old days.. CUPS... Things have changed".
Sure have - I followed the book's instructions "admin, printer" duh! and less than 60 seconds later ubuntu had found the printer on the wlan (God knows how), found a driver (not the exact driver but a best-fit) and installed it.
Printing works perfectly.

Just goes to show - give the easiest approach a chance before even beginning to research a solution.
