Why don't you add an actual poll to this?

I use gnome by the way just because it is what I first tried and it works for me.

I'm using GNOME because while KDE seemed stunning at first, it actually seemed bloated after a while and all it's features that i used can be replicated in GNOME. Also, I just couldn't stand the bad GTK integration. However, I do miss plasma, but i'd rather have fast Compiz Fusion (Compiz was slow for me KDE).

Started with Gnome, years ago with Red Hat 6.2, and I have used it ever since.
KDE seems bloated and sort of childish IMHO.
For a couple of years I have used the minimalistic Window Managers, tho (BlackBox mostly)

I use gnome.

I use it because it is fast, less memory demanding, and it is default with Ubuntu. Although I have tried Kubuntu as well, but after a while I didn't like that because it was compromising the performance just because of looks (on my old machine).

i'm just using Ubuntu (since yesterday) and i'm using Gnome atm.

i tried KDE but indeed, it seems bloated, and gives me too much of a windows feeling, i did not try compiz fusion on KDE yet but i dun think i'll even bother.... i'll barley use it annyway.

Compiz rocks on Gnome btw

*love Ubuntu*

but of course for ubuntu, gnome is better.

you could always use many of third party softwares to give gnome a stunning look.

JWM for general desktop use. A minimally compiled build is about as fast as dwm with more intuitive usability (at least to me). Actively developed and both lighter and faster than Openbox, Fluxbox, IceWM, or pekwm. Highly configurable and outside of native compositing support, can do just about anything you would expect a modern window managing environment to do.

When not using that, I tend to be a KDE man.

i don't really get the point of desktop environments. they seem like their primary purpose is to manage being a desktop environment. i prefer openbox, or some other similarly simple window manager that just gives me access to the apps. lately, i've been using compiz-fusion by itself. it's a little like openbox with breast implants.

I use gnome because I think that KDE is a little too colorful for me? It seems like its designed for a little kid.

Not to mention the fact that it annoys me that everything starts with a K. I dont think K is the most warm and welcoming letter in the alphabet and when I read the names of the programs like Konquoror, Kolf, Kubuntu , etc.. it just does not make be feel good inside..

haha probably not a very good reason but its mine.

Gnome on most machines, but I also use LXDE, IceWM, XFCE (not Xubuntu), and JWM. I realize that IceWM and JWM aren't DEs, but what's wrong with running a WM directly on top of X?

SomeGuyDude
April 10th, 2009, 08:32 PM
Compiz by itself. You'd never tell the difference between it and GNOME+Compiz save I don't have gnome-panel going.

Really, the "UI" of Gnome is what? It's the panel and Nautilus, mostly, plus your GTK apps. If you use AWN for your dock and auto-hide your panel, almost nothing is inherently "GNOME". It's not like KDE where everything is directly tied into the thing (Kicker/Konqueror/Plasma/etc).

Gnome. After the KDE4 humiliation i switched over. At least it doesn't paste when I middle-click in a browser and the thumb button actually goes back.

I would use QVWM if it weren't so hard-coded.

Gnome - Basic very flexable window manager and environment, very easy to use, friendly, and overall great look.
KDE - A nice flashy environment with many features for everyday use, windows-like environment, and stable at the moment.
Xfce - A very lightweight, simple, flexable environment for slow computers and for users than need speed.

If you have modern high end hardware, I suggest you go for Gnome (Ubuntu). That's the best. If you love eye candy, you should go for KDE (Kubuntu). And if you have old hardware, the other two desktop environments won't be very fruitful and then xfce (Xubuntu) should be the best.

why does everybody say that gnome has less eye candy than kde?
i strongly disagree with that, gnome can become way nicer than kde , with less than half an hour of work :O

Talking about eye candy, Gnome is definitely way better. But KDE4.2 is coming with sleek and sexy graphics, without having to install new themes. That's it. With the themes and setting up Compiz, gnome becomes way better than KDE.

FWIW, the theming thing really isn't "GNOME". It's Emerald and a GTK theme. Take ten minutes and GNOME, XFCE, Openbox, and Compiz standalone can all look almost the exact same (I'm tempted to install them all on this machine just to show how they can look totally interchangeable).

I do agree that by and large GTK themes look better than QT themes, though.

XFCE. It's a full DE, with a built-in compositor. It's also fast, and I honestly think that it's nicer than GNOME... the only thing is Thunar isn't good, but no problem, just grab PCManFM.

But get a real XFCE install, like from a minimal installation, not xubuntu.

For Ubuntu I would suggest Gnome of Xfce.

However, if you're willing to use something else then KDE is pretty great. Been using KDE 4.2 in Slackware and it's very nice. :D

Gnome, because it came with Ubuntu. i have tried Kubuntu (LiveCD), but thought the environment looked a bit off.

I use Gnome but code QT (far superior to GTK) so if someone were to create "Qnome" I would certainly switch :) Seriously though, I think Gnome is just fantastic, I don't really care that it is progressing slowly, it has it's own unique interface (KDE just seems like Windows) and can be themed very well.
