hi I'm relativity new to Ubuntu Linux and I have see you tube vids on the 3d cube effects etc. now I thought this was really cool and set about geting the compiz manager, I did this and checked the boxes for the effects and nothing happened I then went into appearance and check visual effects and saw that I they weren't enabled I checked normal and advance and nether of them worked and I then looked at my graphics card and I have a built in

Graphics chip: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 [S3 Uni-chrome Pro] (rev 01)

I've been through and downloaded the right files at http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=45&CatID=3220 and read the the instructions which make no sense to me at all
I am tempted to buy a nvidia graphics chip but I looked at my motherboard and I only have a pci and all the nvidia chips need pci express so I'm kinda stuck! Could some one please teach me how to get these effects step by step because I'm only 16 and I'm not the brightest of the bunch :P thanks!

:lolflag: I am 14! The best way to get Compiz on your computer is to install it through the Add/Remove applications thing. (type "compiz" in the searchbox)

Tick the Desktop Effects and the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm) checkboxes

Once installed, you should at least be able to access your Desktop Effects thing on System -> Preferences.

Enjoy!

Hey calvinps - Does that only work for kde or does it work for gnome also?

Thanks,

The Desktop Effects settings work on both KDE and GNOME. :)

Just to clarify... Compiz-fusion comes with a default installation of Ubuntu (it has for the past few releases). The Compiz Config Settings Manager, for whatever reason, does not.
Don't confuse CCSM with Compiz, though. CCSM is just a more sophisticated front-end (GUI) for Compiz-fusion.

The problem you're going to run into is not installing compiz, but rather your integrated graphics chipset and a decent driver for it...

Thanks everyone for your response i still have not solved my problem i think ineed to find a driver for my graphics card and then i might be able to have the effects but im still not to sure what to do....and i am also confused by somthing i found which said i might have a restricted driver and i used the hardware device prograam and it said nothing found so i know it's not a restricted driver.
