What ubuntu (8.10) package should I install to get the panel app that shows the current language being used for input? It's the app that you click on to go from, for instance, USA to esp to fr, changing the input language and keyboard layout from US English to Spanish and then to French. I just got a System76 laptop with ubuntu preinstalled--a great machine--but it doesn't have that panel app. I never had to look for it before: when I installed ubuntu myself on a machine it was always there when I added more languages. Now it ain't. Thanks.

I just discovered kkbswitch, which is what I've used in the past. As the name makes obvious, it's a kde app, but it works fine under gnome and other environments. Is there no such app for gnome/ubuntu? I can't find any easy way to change keyboards under gnome otherwise. The keyboard shortcut in the language settings doesn't do squat.
