One of the most exciting open source projects out there, in my opinion, has been Intel's Moblin. It's a platform for mobile devices and has the potential to do a lot for the Linux desktop stack as a whole.
At the Linux Collaboration Summit, the director of Intel's Open Source Technology Center has revealed some details about the company's vision for Moblin, its Linux-based mobile platform. He says that Intel hopes to achieve two-second boot time and redefine mobile user interfaces.http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/04/intel-aims-for-2-second-boot-time-with-moblin-linux-platform.ars

They already did 5 secs on an EeePC and that was before some fixes went into the kernel. Arjan is pretty presistent when he gets an idea in his head so I have no doubt they will slice, cut and dice till they manage a 2 sec boot.

The question is how useful is the session they bring up.

Lots of good changes will come of this for everyone

Intel plans two second Linux boot Intel has detailed plans to tweak a Linux-based operating system to boot in just two seconds. It hopes such speed will make Moblin the natural choice for uses such as computer systems built directly into cars.

The only downside is the Intel Moblin is an (i believe) designed to be an embedded system.I KNOW though, it is a mobile system. We won't be seeing this on our local electronics stores for purchasee =(

The real question remains: After two seconds, what kind of limited desktop can we expect?

If you can get me into a fully fledged GNOME system in two seconds, I'd be the happiest guy on earth :)
