Video Problems

I just tried to update my kernel to the latest using a program (I can't remember the name) after the update I rebooted, and grub was all messed up. It had about 5 different boot selections each one was a different kernel and wouldn't work. So I restored the menu.lst file to the original. Now it will start to boot but when it gets to the username screen, the display is all messed up and then it locks up

I'm new as you can tell so explain yourself please
