What will this mean for Linux? Does this mean that we will be able to plug Spotify into Linux media players?

Nice to see their giving Linux some attention. Spotify is pretty good.

Looks like you're right. We could be seeing Spotify-search plugins for banshee, rhythmbox, exaile, amarok soon! (provided people want to add it to their music app)

I don't really mind, because Spotify already works great with Wine.

Sweeeeeeet. Come on rhythmbox, i've been loyal to you for so long...don't make me switch to banshee. I know the time is coming though.

Edit: Oh, just read 'No Foss for Spotify (http://www.daniweb.com/blogs/entry4221.html)'. How dissapointing.

For those who don't know, there is already a plugin for Rhythmbox (RhythmBox-Spotify-Plugin (http://github.com/ivankelly/Rhythmbox-Spotify-Plugin)) that can access the spotify network, but you have to get a Premium Account (so, payed) to use it.

From Spotify (http://www.spotify.com/blog/archives/2009/04/07/spotify-opens-its-doors-to-developers/):

Libspotify and any applications built with it will be available to Spotify Premium users as of today.

In conclusion, only with Spotify you'll be able to listen free to the music from their network.

I've read something about some reverse engineered plugins, but I haven't found one yet. If they exist, they should be working without a Premium Account.

There has been talk about writing plugins for several players, based on despotify (http://despotify.se/), which is an open source client that can log in to both free and premium accounts. From what I can tell though, the developers of the players are reluctant to include or help in the development of such a plugin, since it violates spotifys terms of use.

I haven't dared to try despotify, since I don't want my account suspended, but I've read that it works.

Okay, now I will just hold my breath till they clear the licensing so I have spotify in Denmark (and people in the rest of the world as well).

hrmm it appears to be closed source and currently severely platform restricted. I believe I will be favoring despotify as was linked earlier as my solution for reasons of openness. I will happily pay for a full premium account and stay with in the terms of use as far as reason and the law requires.
