I myself am pretty new to Ubuntu, and I've been experimenting with the advantages of having multiple workspaces open at once as opposed to having several windows open on one workspace. However, when I have multiple workspaces working, I've noticed that all applications are slower. Is it more speed-conscious to have several windows open on one workspace? And does having one or more empty workspaces affect operating speed as well?

It all really depends on what you are doing. I've noticed if you're running Firefox and programs that need a little bit of juice tend to slow down performance. It actually could be due to your ram. If you're running something in the 512 range maybe even a gig it will tend to be a little choppy no matter how you slice it. I hope this helped out for you.
