This posting is an FYI for other folks who may own the Toshiba A205-S5843 laptop which is a somewhat lower-end but very inexpensive laptop. I had been successfully using Ubuntu 8.04 on this laptop. The builtin wireless adapter was readily auto-detected.

In a separate disk partition I tried upgrading to 8.10. Everything worked fine except the lack of recognition of my wireless adapter. I went through all the forums, hints, notes, that I could find but nothing seemed to work (there are only so many hours in the day and I do try to have a life outside of getting 8.10 to work right). At any rate, I gave up and stayed with 8.04.

This morning I downloaded and tested the CD-only version of 9.04. My wireless adapter was immediately recognized (with WPA encryption) and I successfully connected to the outside world via that adapter. I am very happy now and intend to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.04 in the next month.
