Hi people, I have a pentium mmx 200 mhz with 192 mb ram and a pci embedded vga card (1mb).
Yesterday, I try to install xubuntu 8.10 but the following error:

Could not start x server (your graphical environment)

What is this error?
Is the old pci vga card (only 1 mb and 800x600 resolution)?
Or an old version of motherboard/bios (before 2000 )?

Thanks in advance.

Ciao ciao.

Thanks for the answer, albandy!

I think my vga card is an old pci embedded (on motherboard) with 1 MB RAM and 800x600 resolution. This is sufficient or do you want more informations?

Thanks.

Best regards.

see this page for the minimum requirements...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

I think your mmx fails on all counts

minimum is 300mhz/256Mb and VGA card (seem to recall that I have never got a GUI on less than a 8MB card

Having said that all is not lost as I have a 266mhz Pentium mmx/96Mb ram and onboard card running Hardy 8.04 using K.Mandla's wonderous remix and will post back as soon as I can find the download link for you.

EDIT download link is here..
http://hosted.filefront.com/kmandla/

and read about it here..

An alternative (not Ubuntu) is Puppy linux from here...
http://www.puppylinux.org/

This also runs on the old laptop mentioned above.

all the best for your experiments and post back results or questions.

Hi robert shearer.
I try to run live cd (without installation) with safe video mode, and it successfull run.
There is another problem, my serial mouse don't work and the keyboard don't work very well.

How to resolve these problems?

Thanks in advance.
