I have recently installed kde , and still have gnome as well.

I saw on the softpedia site the same instructions for upgrading from kde 4.2.1 to 4.2.2 as I following to first initially install kde.

So it appears I am just over-writing the kde-related files already on my system - is it this simple ??

it is simple' i just don't know how it will work out considering you have two package managers, adept for kubuntu and synaptic for gnome !

the instructions i provided will show you how to do this with adept.

package managers I imagine, are simply a graphical interface for a background system, meaning both synaptic and adept are in fact using the same process to install/update.

Would I be right ???

Yes, it's all the same system underneath.
