Can someone help me out, I need some basic information on how to install Ubuntu, how to get started with it and what advantages it can offer me.

To install ubuntu you can follow this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GraphicalInstall) If you want to try ubuntu out and do not feel comfortable about partitioning you can go for a wubi (http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php)install which installs inside windows.
