View Full Version : Post your Avitar and does it have a story

Omnios

This might prove interesting.

How to post your avatar: simple make a post explaining your avatar and it should already be there or you can post other avatars you use.

Does you avatar have a storey behind it?

My avitar is Layne Staley of Alice in Chains. Kurt Cobains death seems to get all the attention, but Layne Staley was a much more influential musican for me.

Mine is a cropped shot of Jake (http://emacdogsports.com/modules/xoopsgallery/view_photo.php?xoops_imageid=4&set_albumName=album03&id=res56574), my now 16 year old terrier. A few years ago I had managed to get a set of OK "before" and "after" shots of him, with the idea of creating a mouse-over using both images.
The "Before" is before shoving the cat near his face, the "after" became my avatar :)

Truckee Test:
9 June 1962:
10 Miles south of Christmas Island
B-52 Airdrop; 6970 Feet
Yield: 210 kilotons

This was a parachute retarded LRL test of the XW-58 missile warhead in a Mk 36 drop case. This was a development and verification test for the Polaris A2 missile (which would carry three of these warheads). Satisfactory performance.

ComplexNumber
May 12th, 2006, 04:03 AM
my avatar is of my username - its a complex number. i studied them at uni...and hated them with a passion, but i always considered complex analysis to be like the holy grail in understanding at that time. (a-bi) ≡ a complex number. the 'i' bit equals the square root of -1. there is no such thing as the square root of -1 in real numbers, but it has some unusual proporties with lots of applications in maths and engineering. if you take i = √-1, then
(i * i) = -1
(i * i * i) - √i
(i * i * i * i) = 1
(i * i * i * i * i) =back to i again
they're usually represented as quadrants on a circle when it comes to cycles.

anyway, thats where it comes from.

I use a couple of avatars but the one I use most often is the one I use on this forum too, it's an albatross. Of course I may rotate pictures (I had more than 100 once) but the main idea is that the avatar should represent an albatross.

The idea came to me when listening to one of the Pink Floyd's songs, "Echoes". There are this verses I like a lot "Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air...". Of course I don't really know the *official" meaning of the albatross in this context, as Pink Floyd are very very complex and let you imagine anything on their melodies, but for me albatross means love, geniality, freedom and a lot more. It's something in the air I think :) That melody is so great... I love it you should listen to it.

(I have a Jaguar :))I actually own 6 guitars, a bass and a mandolin. My main electric is still a Tele, but I just had a nice photo of a Strat that I have used occasionally as well as others in avatars. I'm not sure what the one in this avatar is...it is more of an artist's conception of a guitar rather than an actual model. It's rare to find someone like yourself who notices the details rather than just "it's a guitar." :)

Mine is me in a wind tunnel at Iowa State University. I was helping my friend with his Senior Project dealing with low speed flutter. He was trying to get a shape that would oscillate up and down with low speed airflow moving over it. This is generally hard to do since flutter is normally a high speed thing. Because the shape he was testing was unusual, we needed to orientate it properly so I decided to do it for him and made him take a picture because I've always wanted a picture of me in a wind tunnel. Too bad it wasn't in the bigger wind tunnel.

King Protea
Common Names: King Sugar Bush
Genus: Protea
Species: cynaroides

The King protea was originally from the Cape Town area of South Africa. It is actually the national flower of South Africa. Now King proteas can be found all over the world where the atmosphere is dry and the soil has good drainage. It can even be found on Maui.
The flower of the king protea can get to be 12 inches across. On the outside it has many stiff, pointed, narrow bracts, or petals, that give it the appearance of a cup. The bottom half of the petals starts out cream colored or yellow, which turns into bright pink or velvet red on the top half. Inside the cup is a mass of white stamen about 1-2 inches long which all bend towards the center.

Mine's Richard Nixon waving to the press from the White House lawn for the very last time. For our brethren and sisthren who may not know much about American presidents, Richard Nixon was implicated in a series of crimes that came to be known as "The Watergate Scandal," named for a hotel where the oppositional (democratic) party kept their headquarters. Democrat HQ got broke into, and Nixon allegedly (and evidently, now) orchestrated the whole thing. Nixon resigned in shame, and there's the photo. That happened on my very first birthday.

According to Hunter S. Thompson, his worst press enemy (and for whatever reason, present at the parting ceremony), Nixon was absolutley wasted, peepee drunk on nice taxpayer scotch and whacked out on heavy sedatives. If Hunter Thompson's saying that, I can only imagine just how blotto Nixon was...

In America, when the head of state may have done something naughty, the congress (peepee poor imitation of various parliaments) initiates "impeachment" hearings, which are pretty much the same thing as criminal proceedings. If they find you've done something naughty, they kick you out of office. Nixon resigned before they could initiate proceedings.

I've got a premonition: if the Democrats capture congress in November, we may see something eerily similar occur....

May 14th, 2006, 12:14 AM
This link (http://www.dandare.org/dan/aliens/mekon/mekon.htm) shows a better picture of my avitar.

You will see that he first appeared on 2 Nov 1950 in the Eagle Comic which features Dan Dare.

My birthdate was the 2 Nov 1936 so I was an avid reader of Dan Dare at the time.

In 1953 I was a trainee at EMI Electronics in the UK and spent four months in the trainee drawing office sitting at a drawing board with a green lamp. My fellow trainees used to say that because of my small size I looked like the little green man form Venus and called me The Mekon. This nickname lasted until I moved to Australia in 1960.

As I get older and my forehead gets bigger I think it right that I should re-adopt this for my avitar.

Yup, it is indeed a classic. :)

I've revisted some of them now thanks to DOSBox. They seem like new when you haven't touched them for 9-12 years or so. :)

Mostly timing issues (and no adlib soundcard) kept me from playing them under modern hardware. Luckily DOSBox emulates that, and you can adjust cpu cycles on the fly.

My avatar shows that a camera with 10X zoom makes AA rechargeables huge, and that Royal makes a cool electronic dictionary.

I love avatars... they say a picture is worth a thousand words, you can tell so much about a person from thier avatar alone.

Mine boils down to this:
A long long time ago in a galaxy called kansas city i got a 2400 baud modem and compuserver/aol/prodigy and discoverd the internet. Mor importantly IRC. I needed a nick... but couldnt think of anything... then it came to me in a dream... many scenes of epic heroes battle a recurring evil called Dark Falz/Force. One man stood recurring over the centuries amongst new party members in the fight to save the Algol Solar System... His name was Noah... no wait, Lutz... actually Rune... So i over the years have borrowed his timeless name and adopted it to my online persona... going by Rune, Rune^, Rune N. Lutz, Rune D'Shyznit...

to make a long story short, thats basically a pic of the recurring character noah, lutz, rune from the phantasy star series... the character i have derived my online persona from for most of my internet days
