Lost settings upon upgrade

I lost settings with an automatic upgrade. I am using a 64 bit machine so use a workaround for my internet (Flash!) and use two screens. Every time I upgrade I loose the specificities and i have to go thru all the posts again in order to get my old settings back. For the dual screen the easy option is to backup my xorg.conf, I know but isn't there a better, that is more general way?
