Right click on top panel > Click on Add to Panel > Click on Volume Control > Add. That should do it.
Hope that helps.

Try clicking somewhere else on the panel.

The only way that I could get it so I could click somewhere esle on the panel was when I removed what was showing what programs were running. Now I can't get it back and I would like it back.
Nevertheless, I can now add or remove icons. But when I tried to add a volume icon I get a message about the applet missing and asks me if I want to delete it..
So I would like to get that applet back as well as my programs running thing.

the message is:
"panel encounted a problem while loading OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet"
How can I fix this without deleting it?
