I am running eee ubuntu 8.04 on an eee 1000 ASUS and the icon for turning off the OS/ computer is not working. I click it, and it says turning off computer, but does nothing.

History is that I had a box pop up when I was turning on the computer, it said something about an applet that was not installed (GNOM something or other) and asked me if I would like to delete it. The first couple of times, I clicked to ignore the request and things worked fine, but once I chose the delete option and not I have the situation where I have to manually press the switch on the computer to turn it off.

Can you tell me how I could get the applet back so I can turn the computer off normally?

Thanks

Does it shut down properly when you do "sudo shutdown -P 0" in the terminal?

What if you delete and re-add the shutdown options thing to the panel?

Perhaps I spoke to soon. That was yesterday , and this morning, after I did my updates, the icon started working again.

Creepy.

Hopefully it stays working.
