View Full Version : Xubuntu and Kubuntu Restricted Extras Redundant?

I've just realized while looking through Synaptic that I only have Ubuntu restricted extras installed. I do have all three desktops: Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu installed.

I've never noticed any problems with any of the restricted extras on the other two desktops. Is the only difference the name? If so, why not just have one package and call it simply restricted-extras?

There are quite a few differences between the three meta-packages.

You can compare the differences by clicking on the links here (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=restricted-extras&searchon=names&suite=intrepid&section=all).

I see. All three binaries are made from the same source but with different dependencies. I suppose I never noticed anything missing in the other two because I use my familiar gnome apps in all three environments.

Thanks!
