So, here's my story

Couple days ago, my first (main - windows install) HDD decides to cook itself.
Damn..

So, while i wait for my warranty to clear, i decided to install ubuntu again.

Now, i'm trying to grab some data off the second HDD before i portion it out and install ubuntu.
Problem?
It wont let me mount it because i cant remove it through windows..
So, i try to unmount it through terminal manually..

And i need to be under root.

I'm running a live CD, so i don't know how to....

Any advice?
I would simply run it off a USB, but i don't have any.

Actually - while i'm here;
Can i run ubuntu off an SD card?

You can use the sudo command under the LiveCD as you would in an installation, it just doesn't ask for a password.
I'm not sure what you mean by not being able to remove it through Windows.
You could run off an SD card if it were bootable from BIOS, like if it's a USB device.
