Xubuntu, with Human GTK+ theme, and "gelly" as the XFWM4 window decoration. I got the wallpaper from the Xubuntu Art Wiki.

Come February, it will look better. I'm about to switch to a modern computer which can handle a nice-looking desktop.

cstudent: That's one hell of a wall! Angry Monkey!

PatrickMay16: I like the dark theme.

Somehow, that reminds me of a Win98 desktop.... *wonders why* Nice bg, though :)

This is mine - same bg as I added on New Year's Eve, but I've been fiddling around with panels, desklets etc.

My desktop used to look cool, but my HD got erased (long story, involves windows) and now I have the default human theme with the default background.

Are there any good websites besides for www.gnome-look.org and art.gnome.org that you can get some good themes and wallpapers?

Technically, GNUstep isn't a desktop... it is an application development framework... based on the OpenStep specification created by NeXT (now Apple Computers)... It is a 'sibling' of Cocoa, one could say... It's not aimed at older machines as such... though it runs blazingly fast on them... its aimed more towards application developers who like the OpenStep spec...

What makes GNUstep so appealing, IMHO, is that it has the highest flexibility to power ratio I have ever seen in any environment. Also the fact that it has the most intuitive and elegant interface ever designed... (once again, my opinion... but one shared by many others)

The machine is a 333 MHz Celeron, so it requires the lightest software. It's Breezy, running Fluxbox and Konqueror. The terminal is aterm. The wallpaper is this (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=14940).

Dockapps are: wmbutton, wmxmms, wmwave, wmmount, wmmemload, wmclockmon, wmcpuload and wmtop (all installed via apt-get).

The fluxbox theme is Cthulhain.

The KDE theme used by Konqueror is Black and White (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=24645).

With referrence to your desktop picture: would that be Stormfront as in the White Nationalist group (http://www.stormfront.org) started by former Ku Klux Klan leader Don Black? The same man who runs JewWatch.com (http://www.jewwatch.com)?
But hey, let's give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you were referring to the Billy Joel album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storm_Front), even though you used the image from the other site.

My screenshots keep getting bigger ;) In light of my acquisition of a bigger monitor (21" IBM flat CRT), I've increased my resolution to 1600x1200. Needless to say, this probably isn't for dialup users.

http://longlivemarneus.serveftp.net/Justin/screenshots/Screenshot_010506_small.png (http://longlivemarneus.serveftp.net/Justin/screenshots/Screenshot_010506.png)

It's fairly simple. Standard Gnome, but using Openbox as the window manager (thanks to stormy eyes for the tutorial). I've themed with with a theme called "Water Vapor", and then I used a similar looking theme from the openbox themes pack for the WM, called "Curdled". I've also changed my login screen and splash image. My Beep skin is a Winamp skin, called "WinShady". I thought it looked pretty cool. I'm still on the lookout for a silver skin to match the rest of my theme.

I changed my desktop around completely. I mean completely. So I'm posting a new one. I got my nice new computer built, and am using full GNOME+Metacity along with gdesklets. The gtk+ theme is Human, the window decoration is Clearlooks2, the backdrop is called "Ages" and is available on the GNOME-look website or through the GNOME Art Manager. Enjoy!

What themes are you using?

Actually i used a small hack;) , since i was unhappy with the "lack" of stuff in Gnome ART/LOOK , i searched the net for windows icons who look like Mac OS X , changed the extension from .ico to .png , placed them in /usr/share/pixmaps , and applyed them using the option custom icon .

Unless it has multi versions/color variations etc...
I haven't installed a theme with the gnome-theme-manager in years. It is just as easy to extract to .themes or .icons and know everything is installed correctly.
I hate it when people bundle the themes up like that.
It defeats the whole purpose of drag and drop..
I myself dont do this when designing my themes as it is harder for new users to install.
Cheers,

You can get e17 from CVS. Sometimes the CVS files dont compile as they should, so from time to time keep checking and you should be able to get a good batch.

That doesn't work when you have theme packs with 2, 3, 4, 16 versions. Wha? You expect me to make that many submissions. The first thing said would be...."one package containing all, would have sufficed". Drag and drop is nice for themes but since the theme capplet was broke for years, I just developed a habbit of not wasting my time on it. Never know what goodies you'll miss ;)

Someone HAS to tell me how to get conky like that. It is sorta like above the desktop in a sorta way.
I'm using things from here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=61297 for conky
and xcompmgr for shadows. Look here, for the HOWTO: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75527

This is my xcompmgr command, in startup:

xcompmgr -r 12.00 -o 0.75 -l -15.0 -t -15.0 -I 0.028 -O 0.03 -D 10.0 -c -C -f

This is my conkyrc and the script for the calendar.
Put the right values for your system. Enjoy :)

hi, can someone show me how to change the panel like that? and are there other good panels?
Right click on one of the 2 gnome panels and select "New panel".

Then you can customise the new panel.
If you want to use a menu button like mine you have to download it (one of those buttons for KBFX from kde-look.org).

Then backup the current Ubuntu logo:
sudo cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png_bak

Then replace the old logo with the KBFX button:
cd /home/your_username/folder_with_the_new_button

sudo cp name_of_the_new_button /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png

Now let's add it to the panel:
Right click on the new panel and select "Add to panel".
Select "Main Menu" and add it.

Type this to update the panels:
killall gnome-panel

Customise the rest of the new panel and remove your old panels.

If you want your Ubuntu logo back you have to type:
sudo cp /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png_bak /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/distributor-logo.png

Hi,

such a nice thread!

After scrolling though all the desktops, I decided it was finally the time to make a change to mine - postponed for too long.

My laptop now is really dark - in my opinion reading is supposed to take place green on black. ;-)

Stats:
Darker Theme with BlackmarbleMatrix window contents (Fensterinhalt) and Noia icons (both from art.gnome.org).
A little tweaking was required (Mozilla theme PitchDark, setting handicapped preferences in Adobe Reader to get black backgrounds with green fonts, changing background colors in Thunderbird with user.js+userChrome.css and, of course, a lot of icons had to be set to Noia manually).

Enjoy!

I'm playing around with Ubuntu, and I have a very simple setup -- but I like it that way.

I have a double-row window bar just because I like to see the list of all windows on all desktops, and it's great to have some space to actually see the names. The gear on the side is a starter for gnome-launch-box, even though I also have a key combo for it.

The wallpaper is named fz_demo_ship_01.JPG and found on conceptart.org, but I can't find a direct link right now :-(
Yeah, I use a Vista theme but without composition/transparency; I really like the design of the widgets.

And my window bar is without the bevel buttons -- I really loved how I got rid of those, that made the panel look too busy.

By the way when ever I look at other peoples screenshots they always seem to have much cooler looking desktops than mine. The color tabs are here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=1368&application=firefox

If that don't work then just do a search for Colorful Tabs at:
https://addons.mozilla.org/

Thanks for the comment.

I'm trying to make a backround image for my panels. Too bad that even if I use a .svg it won't scale with the panel. And I'd like to get rid of those white bars in panels too. But I think it's looking pretty nice already :)

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3703/screenshot18yu.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot18yu.jpg) http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/871/screenshot23kn.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot23kn.jpg) http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/363/screenshot38gb.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot38gb.jpg)

I think I could divide the panels into smaller rounded 'containers'. It might look nice..

Still have yet to get into the advanced beautification of Linux. Although at other sites, people have been like, "How did you do that to your Windows?" or "What the hell is that?". I guess Linux for so long has been shrouded by servers and super-geeks that never took the time to pretty their system, that Linux has been given this image of being ugly.

can someone pleas explain the appeal of gnustep to me, i just dont get it. Is it mainly just for old machines because it looks like a stripped down version of flux/black box.
the appeal to me was that i used OpenStep a while back and it was cool to use windowmaker again

it is a very intuitive design and is incredibly functional. i like it a lot, but im using XFCE now since ive been trying lots of stuff out recently
