monitor trouble

ok so i really really need help my monitor is completely messed up im using a thinkpad. the only way to see the screen is to take the back off of the monitor and shine a lamp threw. need help adding a new monitor help im blind

Did the backlight go out, or is the software not controlling it properly?

i really dont know my dad dropped it. everything looks to be connected but when it comes to the electronics of it all im a moron

Sounds like the backlight broke when he dropped it. You can replace yourself, usually, but if you're not electronically inclined, then I would take it to a shop to have it repaired.

Do you have a monitor hooked up to it now? You should be able to change over to it using System -> Preferences -> Screen Resolution.
