Install Ubuntu on already made partition?

I already have a partition on my computer that i want to install Ubuntu on, can i install Ubuntu on to this and reformat this partition?

yes, start the installation from cd and choose the manual option when ubuntu asks you about partitioning. choose your partition and mount it to /
