View Full Version : Is there an interface guideline regarding toolbar icons?

I've recently started using Tucan, an app to manage downloads from sites like rapidshare, and I have to say it's shaping up really, really well. It's a very young project, thought, and not much thought seems to have been put on the interface yet. It does not follow gnome settings about showing only icons / text under the icons / text next to the icons, and it doesn't use standard system icons either, but some huge SVG ones.

Is there a guideline for gnome apps regarding these issues? I would like to file a request, the program is just great and it's a shame that the interface could be improved.

The webpage, by the way: http://tucaneando.wordpress.com/screenshots/

There probably is. Have you looked up GNOME's human interface doc?

And is that Jonathan Richman in your avatar? I love that dude.

You mean this (http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/)? I looked, there's a section about the toolbar, but I saw nothing specific about icons.

The person in my avatar is El Fary, a Spanish showman, very dear, sadly deceased.

It's probably by design. You might be able to get them to fix it if you bug them enough.
I doubt you need to refer them to a spec for it, just make a case for reduced size displays or something.

Phatch (http://photobatch.stani.be/) is similar, though icons are not nearly as huge as the ones in your screenshot -- only slightly larger.

I already filed a bug about it and the guy just said we would NOT change the icons, no argument at all. I think he even deleted the request, he was really adamant about it.

So I want to have something to hold on to before I ask for it again.
