When I run the code "sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin" I get the message that my java version is the newest.

But if I go to java.com I get the message that must update to 1.6.0.13

How do I make this update. I thought this was an automatic update.

Ubuntu does not keep up with upstream releases. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
