I upgraded to 9.04 from 8.10 all was fine until i started to look for screen savers. It would seam that the system/graphics card was over heating, as conky would show an instant jump in temp from 48-50 to 65-77 Celsius and then lines would appear on my screen followed by a change in color across the whole screen. I repeated trying this several times, thinking it was just a bug, with the same results. Lines drawn across the screen and a change in color. I reinstalled 8.10 and all is fine again, no issues.

Could this be a driver and/or cooling issue and has any one else had the same problem?

If you download and install from

https://launchpad.net/~tormodvolden/+archive/ppa

latest xserver-xorg-video-ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon you can use two option in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "ClockGating" "true"
Option "DynamicPM" "true"
EndSection

It's work very well for my X1600
