Has anyone used Portable Ubuntu for Windows (http://portableubuntu.sourceforge.net/index.php?section=main)? What do you think of it?

Great piece of software. Using Ubuntu with no need for install and having the ability to take you with it and using it anywhere Windows is installed, its a great idea indeed!

i used it, and loved the concept, and simplicity.I even did a review for technology site peopleware:

here is the link:

Ubuntu Portable English review (http://translate.google.pt/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pplware.com%2F2009%2F 04%2F04%2Fportable-ubuntu-804-para-windows%2F&sl=pt&tl=en&hl=pt-PT&ie=UTF-8) (translation is not perfect but you will get the point)

Ubuntu Portable Portuguese review (http://www.pplware.com/2009/04/04/portable-ubuntu-804-para-windows/)

Wouldn't be interesting to include Ubuntu portable on the Live CD's in future versions of Ubuntu? It's another great way to cativate users to the Distro!

That's awesome! But I must say, it's weird seeing the gnome bar in windows. I'm going to try this later on.

That is pretty cool. Does it work in Windows Vista?

Is there a danger of Ubuntu/Gnome becoming solely a Windows app because with every Gnome update is better compatibility between the two?

I tried it because I was curious whether it could be useful for MS-Windows users who are interested in Linux but reluctant to try a dual-boot setup.

It is a bit unclear how to start it first, that could be improved a bit.
For the rest it is quite nice, but don't expect good performance for watching videos for example.
I also couldn't think of a quick way how to share documents and backups between the two.
Really recommended for MS-Windows users who quickly want to get the taste of Ubuntu, but make sure to tell them about the drawbacks of this software.

Here's a write up/Howto from Lifehacker: http://lifehacker.com/5195999/portable-ubuntu-runs-ubuntu-inside-windows . Interesting.

Isn't this happening also to KDE? and it seems that this project is doing quite well on his own, although they are porting it to Windows.

I have to remind you that portable Ubuntu, is not a GTK native port to Windows, it is only a version of Ubuntu/GNOME that is running virtualized on Windows. These two things are a bit diferent ;)

+1

When using it, you are still at risk to all the problems of Windows.

I see it getting used for the same reasons as Firefox Portable: So you can use what you like anywhere you go.

For those who have used it, what's the memory/cpu footprint like?

It has IMHO a low footprint for an emulated version of Ubuntu.

I can confirm without any application open, it uses around 20 MB of memory on windows Seven, without any application open (just the top gnome bar).

It however not adequate to an intensive multimédia experience, like watching Video!

I have my disk partitioned under windows to C: and E: When running Portable Ubuntu I can find C: in /mnt but I am unable to access E: even though my Portable_Ubuntu install folder is on E: I also am unable to access any attached USB storage. Has anyone had any success in accessing other than C:

Can't get it run on my work PC, looks like you might need to run it as an admin. Boo!
