I am guessing you are talking about KDE?

"The name KDE was intended as a word play on the existing Common Desktop Environment, available for Unix systems... The K was originally suggested to stand for "Kool", but it was quickly decided that the K should stand for nothing in particular. Additionally, one of the tips in certain versions of KDE 3 incorrectly states that the K currently is just meant to be the letter before L in the Latin alphabet, the first letter in the word Linux (which is where KDE is usually run)."

Knowing Linux naming schemes it's probably a recursive acronym. In that case the K would stand for KDE. Not sure though.

Which stands for the "K Desktop Environment" if I'm not mistaken.

Its similar to ipod, itunes, iphone...
Gnome has a similar scheme, there are a few apps with a G in them, for Gnome.
gcalctool, Gimp, Gaim (now Pidgin)

Yep officially just stands for K Desktop Environment. Must of been the developers favorite letter, first initial, last initial or something xD, lol.

I am aware of this and I wasn't refering to the scheme, I was refering to what "k" stood for.

yeh really it means nothing, there is a lot of stuff in the linux world that mean nothing really...
Linux's name itself should be a sign of that:
Linux is not Unix
Thats what Linux stands for :D
Linux is the L
is not is the IN
and unix is the UX (Ux is the traditional abbreviation of unix)

No, not exactly, linux was going to be named freax, as in free and freak, but someone (i forget who) told linus torvalds (creator of linux) to name it after himself, he to the "x" in freax and replaced the "s" in linux with it to create linux.

It still stands for Linux is not Unix though, at least thats how most people symbolize it

Well GIMP is an actual acronym, it's the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It doesn't stand for GNOME each time.

K though... MAN I hate that, makes finding applications a PITA.

I suppose, although contrary to popular belief, it's not correct:

Initially Torvalds wanted to call the kernel he developed Freax (a combination of "free", "freak", and the letter X to indicate that it is a Unix-like system), but his friend Ari Lemmke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ari_Lemmke), who administered the FTP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Transfer_Protocol) server (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_%28computing%29) where the kernel was first hosted for downloading, named Torvalds' directory linux.

GTK stands for GIMP Tool Kit...

And GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program...

And GNU stands for GNU is Not Unix.

The recursion... It's driving me mad!!!!!!!!!!!

Gnome, btw, originally stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment (GNOME). But it doesn't anymore.
