First of all, I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64 version (now upgraded to 9.04 beta).
After a reboot most of the system text is shown as squares (black border, white inside).
This is not only my user account because the label at the login is the same. I've also tried creating and logging in to another user account.
Thunderbird and firefox won't start. When running from a console I first get an error about not being able to choose a font, then a segmentation fault.
All of the software where the text is squares, which I have tested, says the same, not being able to choose a font.
I've tried rebooting, running dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig (because of the font errors), I've even tried upgrading to 9.04 beta but its still the same. A couple of things changed after the upgrade though: gnome-terminal was fine before but ain't any longer, gedit wasn't fine before but is fine now, the same with log viewer.
Can anybody please help?
