Foxit Reader for PDF is already available. I have used it and it's better looking than xpdf or other PDF reader available for Ubuntu. It is a stand-alone application, exactly the same with the first release of Foxit Reader in windows (although, the newer versions for windows are not stand-alone anymore). It's still free, unlike its windows version since it is still Beta. Here's the link:

Not sure what you mean by 'standalone' product, as it seems to operate under the linux gui, albeit without some features which got added later to the Windows version (commenting ...)

I tried it a couple of months back. All it did was crash.

In windows, you need dll's and other small programs within the greater software to install and run. In linux, they called it dependencies (correct me if I'm wrong). But this one doesn't need any, just download it from the site, open the archive and extract, then click on the software (double-click) and it will open and run. Simple.

On the other hand, the first version of Foxit Reader (for windows only, then) was freeware, that was standalone (portable is the appropriate term because it was to be carried in a Flash Disk). The original Foxit was just over 1.2MB, very light and portable. When it was enhanced, Foxit had to be installed to your PC and it's not portable anymore with about 5MB to spare (and you have to Buyit, Foxit).

I'm sad to hear that, but it never had a problem in my machine. I liked it because it looks better than other PDF readers available for Ubuntu and looks good in Gnome. Why not get a fresh download and try again?
