Hey guys! My dad wants me to install ubuntu on our ancient computer that can't even run the LiveCD. From my understanding, the alternative install disk only installs a few things, not the desktop for one thing. So my question is, what command can I use to install the gnome desktop/GUI in terminal?

The alternate cd is a text base installer and works better with lower end spec machines, it will install the ubuntu desktop. The server version of ubuntu would require you to install the ubuntu-desktop package if you decided to go with a GUI.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. So what exactly would the alternative install disk install?
