Hi all.

I'm working on rebuilding a small server box (Via mini-itx for web, file and mythtv), and my intention is to install mythbuntu on a pair of compact flash cards in a cf->ide adapter.

I would like to install / and /usr to the cf cards, and put put /home and /var out on either a usb or firewire external disk, since that data will be more volatile.

Setting aside possible disk performance issues on mythbuntu recordings (no HD involved, and I will be testing it thoroughly!), I have been looking for what I might have to do to ensure that the external disk is 'loaded' at boot-time, so it will be ready when fs mounts must occur.

The keywords 'usb' and 'boot' are very common these days, so Google has not been my friend today. So, I thought I would ask the question directly.

Is there a way to set up an external usb/firewire disk as a 'native' device that will be recognized on boot?

Thanks in advance for any help.
