I am a newbie to ubuntu and bought a dell notebook with 8.04 installed. I want to install Skype. I have read the section on skype in the support and think I can follow the instructions. My question is: Is this something a rookie should try ? Can I mess up my system easily very easy and cause lasting problems ?

You should be fine..I'd vaguely reccomend adding the deb lines and the gpg key for the medibuntu repository (assuming that is the method you plan to use) via the software sources dialog, as that ought to stop you entering invalid data into the files.

All in all though, its pretty easy, and not that scary I promise.

Hope that helps

P.S. alternatively you can just download the .deb file from here

http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/

by clicking on the little ubuntu logo, then click on the downloaded file to install it.

Have it on 8.04, working OK. Not so on 8.10 or 9.04 ( which is still beta )

I installed the deb file from the previously posted link on my 8.10 and it works perfectly. Just download it, double click on it and click install.
