So I went around and asked people what they liked most about their OS (Windows, or OSX)and they this is what they liked best...

Mac:

-UI
-dock
-menubar
-spaces
-the finder
-underlying technologies
-dveloper tools
-stability
-High Quaity apps

Windows:

-functions
-meets my needs

Now the OSX has a bit more there was more mac then windows users that I talked to, but if we (ubuntu) makes these types of changes (instead of waiting for the newest gnome, or whatever). We could get more people to use it.
Like, I love linux, and I would use it if I could edit videos, and basicly work better then I do with windows. Why does it seem like its taking a long time for linux to get up to the standard windows OS (speaking harsly).

Its even slower viewing web pages in linux then windows... why?!

I'm not sure what you are trying to say exactly but the whole thing with Linux is that most of those things are available if you know how.

GUI's for linux are the most customisable of any system, If you like the look of Windows 7/vista KDE 4.x can deliver and gnome can also of similar themes.

Mac GUI's are readily available too especially if you use one of the many fantastic docks such as AWN. From what I remember when the talk of docks was all the buzz shortly before the release of leopard, AWN is actually more advanced than the mac dock. Personally I don't like docks.

Some of us like the other looks. Personally I like gnomes look, although agree that it needs more sprucing up... then you also have the new netbook/mobile type interfaces and the very simplistic and functional command line based ones etc.

Personally Linux meets my needs and is very functional. It's stable for me and while there are plenty of bugs in somethings that can get quite annoying, usually these are solved by the next release of what ever package.

I ask what underlying technologies are so special about Macs? The only major benefit I see is the possible use of ZFS, which will hopefully be made nothing to envy with the eventual use of BTRFS.

There's no questioning that linux doesn't win when it comes to developer tools and some people argue that Visual Studio is the best... so I guess it's all down to preference in choice... another area where Linux surely wins.

As for high quality apps, from my perspective Linux has many many high quality apps. The areas where it doesn't quite meet the mark seem to be for that small percentage of people who rely on highly specialised software, an example being the comparison between Photoshop and GIMP (good enough for most). The lack of a good AutoCAD replacement can be disappointing for those who rely on it too. FOSS apps will always get better with time provided the support for the app is there. It's the old catch 22 where Linux needs more users to get more apps and more apps to get more users really. All software *could* be ported Linux if the developers had the desire to do so... I don't really see anything worth taking from Mac though personally any apps that aren't available on Windows too are generally garbage in my opinion.

I would like to see better and more intuitive video editing software.

Yea, I was kinda trying to say "hey, why dont we get together and "spruce up" ubuntu" because I mean I know you CAN change the UI of ubuntu, but many users (new and un tech savy, say a mom) would look at linux and go, well, it looks ok... but I dont understand, I mean, I love the fact that linux is a customizable as it is, but I believe that making a better default for ubuntu would draw more new users.

(Oh and I really like the gnome interface too)

I dont know, I just think to get more users we have to stop with the orange desktop, I mean ubuntu is based on birds, why dont we have a green background with a bird flying, and 2 semi transparent panels (top and bottom).

Because I really dont think many users stick with the default theme.

Ubuntu isn't based on birds.
Also people generally stick with what they know/what fits their needs, so just by "sprucing up" ubuntu I don't think it would attract that many new users. For example no matter how nice ubuntu looks, if someone uses there computer for playing all the latest games then they're not going to switch.
Although I do think gnome does need a bit of sprucing up, especially when compared to how good kde 4 looks

Well right now (in my opinion) ubuntu looks alittle dirty, and with all the windows crap going on (new worm, ect.) people will want to switch (and also if windows 7 craps out). But when people switch they want to switch to something more clean, and good looking... Think about it, fedora looks REALLY good, but the newest version doesnt work right, but they still have alot of users using it. (I even considered switching)

Im just saying...

p.s. When I said "ubuntu is based on birds" I ment sorta how macOS is "based" on cats (tiger, leopard, ect..), they theme it (sometimes) towards the nickname... just throwing out a idea with the wallpaper and stuff.

Oh wait.. not all of them where birds.. still, they could have a "nature wallpaper"
