I was going through the Gnome 2.26 release notes and saw this at the very bottom:

"New visual effects, such as the panels sliding in and out at login and logout, and crossfading desktop backgrounds."

Can anyone tell me what exactly this is? Is it just the effect that appears when you change a background?

Thanks a lot!

Yes, that's only new feature for when you change your wallpaper.

The ability to use wallpapers that crossfade between different pictures over time has already been in Gnome for quite a long time. (but there still isn't any official tools to create that kind of wallpapers so it's not much advertised feature. You currently need to write the required XML file by hand.)

It seems like Gnome 2.24 already does this. Maybe it's not what I'm thinking of though.

Yea I was really hoping it was a wallpaper changer of some sort.

I've since found the 'wallpaper-tray' application in Synaptic which looks even better with this new effect (at least I think its using this effect).

Thanks for the replies, guys.
