hi there i have installed ubuntu server 8.10 no problem. i have updated apt and applied the ubuntu desktop. do the routine and launch /etc/init.d/gdm start. no big deal, launches the display manager, a few things unavailable.

so i restart and when its time for GDM to launch again, sometimes i get a black screen with an x.org X in the middle
OR ( big OR)
i get 3/4 of a screen of the GDM and the other 1/4 is garbled graphics (as if badly configured X.org).

also at this point, my keyboard and mouse are frozen, obviously preventing me from going further. :-\

i don't get it, when i first started gdm, it recognized my monitor, my graphics card, and everything else!

somebody please help!

why the garbled-ness..

Try booting into recovery mode and using xfix.

What graphics card are you using?
