I was thinking along the lines of personal jokes when I saw the topic.
One year we bought a kiddie pool and told everyone that we had gotten a huge above-ground pool and were having a pool party. We had primed them for a couple of weeks before. Everyone arrived with their bathing suits, towels, and changes of clothes. No one suspected it was an April fools joke but we did end up having a lot of fun that day and into the night nonetheless.
