AMD 64 dual boot with XP... GRUB wont start up

I just loaded Ubuntu 8.10 on my notebook (AMD 64 turion MT28, xp pro was installed first) When I boot up the computer, GRUB does not start up, and the system just boots XP. I am a newbie and am not entirely sure about everything. I can only boot Ubuntu from the Live CD boot. How Can I get GRUB working?

When you installed Ubuntu, where did you install GRUB? If you used the liveCD and accepted the default, it installed to the MBR and you should be seeing a menu. If you used the alternate CD, you may have installed GRUB to the Ubuntu partition.

every time I do

find /boot/grub/stage1 (I have also tried: find /grub/stage1)

I get an error 15 (I think that it cant find the file.)

I tried using wingrub, and it doesn't recognize ubuntu when I install. I followed pretty good directions on the install for XP home as well

In order to get a clearer picture of your setup, I suggest to boot from the Ubuntu LiveCD and download the Boot Info Script to your desktop:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:


sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign "#" graphic button in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what the solution to your booting problem might be.

Here it is. I am not terribly sure what it all means. I really want to give Ubunutu a chance but I still need windows xp for certain things so I need the Dual Boot. I hope you can make some sense out of this. Thanks again for the help so far!

Did you have any error messages while installing Ubuntu? You are missing various important boot files and it looks like the installation did not quite finish. Try this:

Boot from the LiveCD, open a terminal and do



sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt --recheck /dev/sda
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
sudo chroot /mnt /bin/bash


and at the new prompt:



update-initramfs -c -k all
update-grub
exit


Reboot and see whether you can boot into Ubuntu.
You still will have to edit menu.lst so that your are able to boot into Windows, but we'll worry about that later.

The boot info script was not able to recognize the 3.5 GB partition /dev/sda2. Do you know what's on where?

I have been having one more problem now. Every time I need to put in my password. I get an error window saying something like.

I thought I was an administrator when I set the OS up?

Given all the problems you are having I suggest to check your LiveCD for errors (Boot from the LiveCD, the first screen will give you on option to check the CD for defects). If your CD is indeed defect, you might consider to burn a new CD at a small speed and reinstall.

Are you using 32 bit or the 64 bit version of Ubuntu?

How do I setup up grub now so I can load windows?

Since "sudo" is not working, try this:

Boot into recovery mode: Press "esc" during the "3 2 1" countdown at boot up. The Grub menu should appear. Then choose the second entry (recovery mode)

At the "root" prompt type


nano -B /boot/grub/menu.lst
This will open the file "menu.lst" in the commmand line editor "nano"

Change "timeout 3" to "timeout 10"
Change "hiddenmenu" to "#hiddenmenu"

Add

title Windows XP
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

to the very bottom of the file.

Save the file by pressing


Ctrl + O
Enter
Ctrl + X

Then reboot via


reboot
You should now automatically get the Grub Menu, where you can choose between Ubuntu and XP

Got windows working again. Thanks. I did download the 64 bit version of Ubuntu. The CD didn't register anything when I checked for errors before I installed. I was considering just reinstalling the OS with a different disk a friend of mine got to work. When I initially tried to do this, I couldn't figure out how to do it without creating another partition (again I'm am not 100% sure of what I am doing).

You are in the "admin" group. So I have no idea what the problem could be. I suggest to start a new thread. (include the error message, the output of "id" and also the output of "sudo cat /etc/sudoers")

Do you have any problems other when the one already mentioned? If not, see whether you can fix the "sudo" problem before reinstalling.

But if you decide to reinstall, just choose "manual" partitioning, select your ubuntu partition, click on "edit partition" and then select "reformat" and mount point "/". Otherwise just follow the directions on the screen.
