I am trying to install Ubuntu on a very old laptop. It is a Toshiba Satellite with XP on it right now. It only has 512MB of RAM or something... But every time I try to install Ubuntu (8.10), selecting either "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" doesn't work. They both load up, but then after a while, it goes to the terminal after a short list of "write" errors. How can I fix this? Will installing Xubuntu help?

yes, the system may not have the resources to run a live cd install, you can try the ubuntu alternative cd.

scroll down and choose from the list of download sites nearest to you, you are looking for the i386 iso.
