View Full Version : Linux is not illegal... yet

Here's an amusing quote I pulled from a russian website. Just goes to show that ignorance has no boundaries.

My best shot at translating it:

One of the representatives of the "C" (stands for computer) branch of the russian ministry of internal affairs comments on Linux: "The very fact of installing Linux on a computer, according to russian laws, is, sadly, not a crime. But this fact clearly states that user is wary of the inspectors finding something illegal on his computer and wants to conceal his activities. We should make a list of all these hackers and periodically check them. Having Linux on a computer is the same as having porn, which is not a crime in itself, but is closely related to other activities - producing, distributing and child molestation which are absolutely illegal."

Well as long as these tools are in charge i don't think russian linux users have anything to worry about. :)

Well hes not totally wrong, but saying that all linux users are hackers (the hackers that make viruses not to be confused with cool haxors that make cantennas) is pretty absured. If you put a bunch of botnet makers in a room the chances are most of them run linux they are to computer savy to run windoze.

Its like saying people with tattoos are banned from hotels because they are more likely to be criminals, its absurd but true kinda because most inmates at prisons have tattoos.

Its stereotyping i guess.

Yeah this quote is wrong on so many levels )

I could maybe understand the old stereotype about Linux = hackers, but how does he go from there to porn I will never know.

@amitabhishek Thanks

I can't find the child molestation option anywhere on my Ubuntu :( Dah well, it was probably the vodka talking anyways.

Wait, what?

How is linux like porn? Is if frowned upon in Russia? Do they presume every Linux user is some sort of black hat hacker?

Also, how in the hell is porn closely related to child molestation?

What the hell is wrong with that guy?

The leaps that guy makes in his thinking, damn.

Hah, I wouldn't want to be his kid.. He's using deoderant! This means he's trying to camouflage the smell of smoking cannabis --> smoking cannabis is also closely related to molesting children and so on.

I guess he's not relating porn to linux, he just says that in the same manner that porn indicates child molestation (sic!) linux indicates being a hacker.

mother's milk is at the root of it all, of course. sure, it starts off innocently enough, but soon, you're installing some linux distro on your computer and the next thing you know, you're shooting some good looking guy in the head in a parade in dallas. who knew it could end up like this?

I'd say you're most likely to be a malicious hacker or pirate if you use Windows. There are far more hacking utilities for Windows than there are Linux. And most of the p2p stuff is written for Windows. I remember in my windows days looking at lamer sites with all the malicous programs like Nuke '95, 7thSphere Divine Intervention, Mail Bombers (there was one that sent random yo momma jokes), Ping flooders, icq bombers etc. You don't really see alot of these weapon apps for Linux though. I guess Linux is for more mature users.

Can you provide a direct link to the article. It's customary to do so when quoting the source, and would also improve credibility.

I think they're banned from some Japanese public baths pretty much for that reason, though.

You would think a communist/socialist/whatever they are these days country would embrase Linux over anything made by an American Company. but then again these are the same crazy people who turn off the European gas pipeline because they assume that Ukraine is stealling from them.

I dunno my comment is off topic but how the hell does having porn mean you are more likely to be a child molestor?! I can see if it was child porn, but porn? wtf

They are confusing hackers with crackers. Hackers can modify the kernel to improve it, and not necesarrily try to crack someone's computer.

Wrong meaning for "hacker."

I don't take this seriously.

Why you ask? Because just a few months ago the goverment-owned Russion Federal Postal services completely switched over to linux.

It's either a non-existant quote or an one-day-early april fools joke.

Even if Linux users are trying to conceal their activities, it doesn't mean their doing anything illegal. I don't want anyone to know my on-line banking password for instance.

Look at the date, guys! This outrageous remark was made two years ago. Things have changed since then, somewhat. The Russians started introducing Linux in some schools, and the President keeps mentioning information security and how bad it is to have Microsoft a monopolist on the Russian IT market,

People calling us hackers, communists, poor, rebels or whatever are just jealous. :)

BTW, on that same site there is a link for news about eMule, if you read them, you'll see they say nothing about the illegal downloads people can do with it.

Indeed, and thanks for pointing that out.

Having Linux on your PC is the same as having porn? Blimey, that must be the reason why I like Linux so much. Right, I'm off to play with my parameters........ ;)
