Oh never heard of it but I'll check it out. The main thing I like about this way of downloading YouTube videos is because I can easily download it anywhere by typing a couple of letters. Pretty cool in my geeky eyes lol.

GREAT FIND!!! Too bad it's only mp4. Most mp3 players don't/can't play mp4.

You can use ffmpeg to extract the audio from an mp4 to an mp3. I forget the arguments needed for this, but a look at the man page should lead you on the right track :).

Hmm. You can try Avidemux or Handbrake ;).

When you are watching a video on youtube, google (or any other?) site the video is stored in your /tmp folder.
So you can watch it and if you like it just don't close it and go to /tmp and copy it to another folder and there you go, no need to download it again.

Wow great tip. The main reason I wrote the guide using PWN Youtube is so that it's OS and newbie friendly ;).

Been there, done that. Neither of those two worked for me. Avidemux worked once....then it crapped out. ffmpeg would not work at all......I had ALL the codecs correctly installed. All dependencies were installed. The system was restarted before attempting to run the ffmpeg command.

2 thumbs straight down!!! What a waste of time they were! NO THAKNS!!!

pwn youtube is much better and GUARANTEED to work.

I use the Flash Video Resources Downloader (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5229) Firefox plug-in and just click on the button on the lower right of the window to download and save.
and then use apt:winff to convert it.

If the plug-in happens not to work, I do it LasherHN's way.

best youtube video downloader i have ever used is this:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10137

it downloads the videos in MP4, instead of flv. and it works for both hd and regular ones.

all the other ones i have used don't work nearly as well as this

Well if the material in YouTube that you are downloading is copyrighted then it is but it's YouTube not The Pirate Bay. Most videos are videos made by random people who don't copyright their work and even if the material is copyrighted then YouTube takes it down pretty quickly.

also, downloading youtube videos is sometimes important, as it seems half of my favorited list has been deleted for one reason or another, even music videos that were posted by the record companies themselves are now 'deleted'. So now i download a video if i like it enough.

That's youtube's problem......if they can't offer viewing material(a.k.a. videos), for free, then they wouldn't exist.

Overall I think the method I wrote about is the best way to download YouTube videos. Not trying to go against you guys but there are a lot of advantages to the method because you can download the videos anywhere, in any computer, with no installing extra programs and its quick and very easy to remember. If your at a friends house and you need to download a video it's rude to install an extra program just to download YouTube videos...why don't you just type "pwn" and get it over with ;).

I agree... This is a great way of grabbing Vids without the hasle of installing programs that you will only use if any once on your friends PC or Library comp.

It`s still quite possible to retrieve the video from your browsers cache in XP.Not quite as straightforward as copying from your /tmp but possible all the same.

I use Elltube, it might be a program instead of a script but it uses ffmpeg as a backend which means it can convert to AVI, MPEG, MP4, 3GP, MP3, WAV or AMR in one go so to speak. Since most of mine are audio rips this comes in handy. Audio quality on flv is horrible though

Yeh I'm really picky about sound quality so I don't think I would able to do that.:KS

ArtF10

Would that be relevant though?

In neither case are you actually saving a .flv file first and then converting. Instead, you are obtaining an mp4, for example, directly from the youtube link.

http://1024k.de/bookmarklets/video-bookmarklets.html

its just a bookmark that contains javascript that makes you a download link. so you just go a youtube page and click a bookmark.

if you like downloading youtube vids you can also use Miro (it does lots more too) http://www.getmiro.com/

Does pwn-youtube convert from .flv to .mp4? Or does it somehow magically spit out mp4s directly?
