Ok I'm a bit Nervous about posting this as I'm unsure how it would be taken by the community. That being said I don't know if any of you have heard of ning.com but it allows you to create your own social networking style website, and it's free. I thought it might be a great way for the ubuntu community to get social, especially in light of OMGPP being shut down. The point here is that These forums are meant to be support forums and have a strictly enforced set of rules. Which I think is a great Idea it keeps these forums pointed exactly at what they are meant to be pointed at, Ubuntu Support and Development. I'm just hoping to help give the community a place to socialise, an after office hours hang out if you will..lol.

You don't have to like it you don't have to try it, but if your interested the web address is: http://myubuntu.ning.com

Thanks for taking to the time to read my post.

Those "create your own website for free in just 3 minutes"-web services suck. It's all so generic and just plain bad.

You know it doesn't really matter that You probably didn't even investigate the website. However I will tell you that for free they offer some pretty heavy features, comparable to myspace, as well as some premium features. I don't know many people who have the resources to invest in such an experiment. (Server space, bandwidth, scripting knowledge, all rolled into one). I just want to be social with fellow Ubuntu users, and be allowed to touch the grey area's which you can't go into here at the Ubuntu forums. So I thought this website offered a nice, way to do so without personal expense since I can't afford to start my own social networking website.

Nice initiative, I won't be joining as I stay clear of social network sites, but it's great to see people trying to get the community together as this forum is losing it's social touch.

I've actually been thinking about working on a Free Software/Free Culture social networking community similar to Myspace or Facebook.

Maybe with some encouragement I'll get started on it. Running a cheap server and a CMS such as Elgg would be a simple enough start, and community donations and dedicated developers could make it into a reality.

I guess the only thing stopping me is getting a domain name, I haven't thought of a good one that wasn't taken.

You can get a free .co.cc domain, and there's plenty of them available.

Some cost money though (like ubuntulinux.co.cc linux.co.cc and ubuntu.co.cc )

and some are taken (mybuntu.co.cc )

Just out of curiosity:

1) How long has your networking site been live?
2) How many members are using it?

Just out of curiosity:

1) How long has your networking site been live?
2) How many members are using it?

1) Since right before I started this thread
2) Since then only one person besides myself has registered I was hoping for more but it seems nobody is interested.

Its a shame that nobody has joined. I was thinking about giving the whole social network thing a try. Your one made it sound that everybody on it would have at least one thing in common.

Yes, thats basically what we are trying to achieve... a sort of friendly society / club for 'buntu users. Our numbers are slowly growing and the site appears to be taking on it's own, particular feel. Here's to a bright future for it! ):P:KS

woppy71 is correct the site does seem to be getting it's own feeling to it. It's nice to have somewhere to go where you can just be a bit social with people you have something in common with. I think this is great for people just looking to make new friends and such. I know in my own family I'm really the only person who is as interested in computers as well I am...lol. So having a place where I can hang with other people who are is great.

First of all , Nicely written and a great idea. I will join as soon as i get some time off after writing this post. I've always wished that there was a place offering more freedom than the forums (more than the Cafe , i mean).
Although , i do not really join social networking sites , I will give it a try since you write so nicely , you touch my heart :D

Cheers Angel! :guitar:

I never use or trust social networking websites, as they are renowned data miners, & that is one thing I will never support, as I value my & your privacy.

woppy71
April 11th, 2009, 10:57 AM
Yes, that is certainly an issue with this sort of thing, that is why we are looking into ways of migrating the site to a dedicated host later (should the site prove a success) and using our own software setup so that we will be able to guarantee, as much as is reasonable the privacy of our users.

Also in answer to this, I feel that it is important to point out that we are taking privacy extremely seriously and therefore we will be publishing a privacy page that will, as much as possible, detail what the privacy issues are to our current and potential members.

Thanks for pointing that issue out to readers of this thread, I know that it is necessary to bring this issue to light :)

Well, almost two weeks on now, and we have 28 members, and the atmosphere that we were looking to develop is beginning to emerge.

So far, I think of it as a great success, as often the first couple of weeks in such a project are the most difficult. I Had the horrible feeling that no one would be interested and that we would only be looking at the founder, Angel, myself and a few more as being the only members, but I now believe, more than ever that we can make the place a success.

I also feel that I am , at last, beginning to put something back into the community, I had always just been a user and had not participated in making the 'buntu thng better and had just taken things for granted.

I now feel that I am, personally, doing something to promote this wonderful OS of ours, in my own little way and I hope that the Ubuntu Network becomes a well known little corner of the 'buntu world where people go to gather for a good time.

Thanks to all of you have have passed comment on the Ubuntu Network and thanks especially to those who have joined our merry little band! :)

Heres to cracking that 100 member mark, only 72 to go!

Take care all :guitar:

Gary ):P

Someone has just joined, so 71 to go to reach that 100 mark!! come on people! :)

Yes privacy is always a concern but also you must remember that people can only get information that you yourself have provided. So as long you only put the information you wish people to know out there then this shouldn't be a concern.

I agree with woppy71 in that I to we're concerned that this would go no where however things seem to be growing quite nicely at this point. The whole feel of the community is a very warm receptive feeling. I have taken the time to write our about us/Mission statement up so if anyone wishes to see what our goals for The UN are feel free to check it out.

Thanks to all those who have joined so far and I look forward to meeting and getting to know even more of you :D

Further to this issue, there is a privacy link at the bottom of the site's home page, which goes into great detail about Ning's privacy policy as well as other important details. Hopefully, this will enable people to make an informed decision of weather they wish to join the network, should they be worried about the privacy issue. :)

Well, we now have 30 members in total, but I am still hoping to hit an initial target of 100 by the end of may, which I do think is achievable. But, only if people take a peek and like what they see. C'mon people, take a peek, if you don't like it, then fair play to you, but you never know.. you might have your curiosity peeked just enough to want to join! :KS

Take care! ):P

You missed some

The Community Cafe
The Community Chat area is for lighthearted and enjoyable discussions, like you might find around a water cooler at work.

Almost any non-tech-support topic may be discussed here. Discussions on religion and politics are not allowed, except for politics directly related to free and open source issues. Any topic or discussion that causes problems or drama will be closed. This area is intended for fun and community building, not arguments. Please take those elsewhere. Thanks!

But yes you are missing something, the nature of these forums, is about being more for support than for chit chat. The cafe is provided as a courtesy by the council and not as what they wish to center the entire forum around. They made that point quite clear with the decision to close the OMGPP forum. The Ubuntu Network on the other hand has a goal of being a social website, and not about support. It's a place where people who share a common interest (Ubuntu/Linux), can come together and be and feel free to discuss even sometimes heavy topics such as politics, religion and the news, or just light-hearted chit chat on any other subject. Due to the nature of the Ubuntu forum even topics in the cafe are monitored so as to keep them from straying to far away from Open Source. woppy71 & I don't Disagree with the councils decision on this as these should be support based forums. We only wish to provide a more social setting for Ubuntu/Linux users.

They even let me create my own li'l sub-forum there for "Total Linux Newbies." Not tech support, just chitchat for n00bs - and help with framing support questions so we won't look too stupid when we ask support questions on this site, LOL.
