Emesene 1.48 is released. This is an community/unofficial edition but has given semi-recognition by the Emesene devs. (Was on the front page on the community portal, posted by an admin of the forum etc).

IF YOU HAVE x64 THESE PACKAGES ARE NOT FOR YOU, USE THE SOURCE

NOTE YOU MAY WANT TO REMOVE YOUR CUSTOM PLUGINS THAT MAY BE OLDER THAN THE ONES INCLUDED IN THOSE PACKAGES OTHERWISE EMESENE WILL USE THE OLDER ONES. CHECK ~/.config/emesene1.0/pluginsEmesene/ DIRECTORY FOR OLD STUFF.

CHANGELOG

no more gui locks
- compatible with latest window live messenger (wlm 9, or 14)
- webcam sending and receiving (improved), by kjir (http://forum.emesene.org/index.php/topic,1556.0.html)
- fixed various bugs (reconnect counter, windows files) by various authors
- working and useful plugins (buggy were removed) by various authors (mostly user-contributed)
- proxy support (by giuseppe bagnato)
- new ubuntu notifications support

Personally I found webcam still kinda iffy, worth a short though,

Officially Emesene is still at 1.01, but this is no longer being developed as the devs are focusing on a total rewrite for Emesene 2. They are open for the community to maintain Emesene 1.0x in the meantime though, this is one of their releases.

Debs, RPMs, tarballs and source can all be found in the annoucement link.

This doesn't seem to want to install for me, it throws an exception whenever I log in - which as I'm sure you can understand, is both annoying and makes the whole program kind of useless ;)

I think, that this should be named differently to the original emesene.

Are you on 64bit? The thread (and I now added to the OP) has a wanring about it.

I'm on Debian (Sidux) atm and it works, I haven't tried the Ubuntu version yet.

Interesting reading about this version and hopes for merging back into official.

Seems to work, now I will see if the webcam support works when my fiancée wakes up. Hopefully it will be more stable than amsn which tends to spin the CPU at 100%
