Hi,

My xubuntu 8.10 box is kind of messed up, probably due to some hard power-offs after system crash (caused by a program run under wine).

I want to do a fresh install of xubuntu 8.10 but ofcourse i don't want to lose my home data. Problem: i have no space to back up my home directory.

In the ubuntu wiki i came across this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbiquityPreserveHome

Is this feature already active. Can i re-install without affecting my home data? I have my home on the same partition as root

have no space to back up my home directory.

Can you put it on CD/DVD USB external disc? You can not reinstall without losing your data if you donīt have separate home partition.

You need an external device indeed..
Depending on the amount of data you need backed up, you don't need to spend much an an external disk or USB-stick or something.. Having your stuff backed up can be handy in the future.
