I have a new lapttop with Vista. I don't want this touched. I want to install Ubuntu on an external disc and boot from it when I want to start ubuntu. If I do this, will my laptop's disc be untouched?

No, your laptop disk shouldn't be touched. Just make sure you select the external disk when formatting and such.

See this link on how to set it up (on a USB key):

Have you considered using Wubi? Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application. The website is http://wubi-installer.org/

You could also try Virtualbox to run it on top of Vista. The website is http://www.virtualbox.org/
