I tried, and apparently mostly succeeded at, upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10.

When the update finished the network connection icon in the status bar was gone, as was the logoff/shutdown button. I added the 'network manager' app to the top panel but it apparently doesn't work like the original one, when I left click on it I don't get a popup menu showing me available networks.

I floated around the System-Administration & System-Preferences menus looking for a way to connect to a network I don't know the SSID of. I had no luck there.

The help file wasn't very helpful, given that under Internet-Connect to Internet-Connect to wireless network it tells you how to connect to a wireless network by telling you to click on the network manager icon.

I finally created a new account whose default setup includes the network manager icon. but I'm really just here looking for a permanent fix for my regular account that doesn't involve opening the terminal every time I want to a network.

*le sigh*

Thanks in advance :3
