I just finished install ubuntu 8.04 on an ASUS P5N7A-VM motherboard.

I am unable to get the audio working through the HDMI cable.

The main purpose for this build it to have a basic "boxee" appliance. On startup to boot directly in to ubuntu and run boxee.

I am new to linux and ubuntu. Any help would be much appreciated.

I see everything is integrated on that mobo.
Perhaps you need to find your way into the sound controller, and pick the source to be used?

Perish the thought, but have you tried this setup with Windows to see if the sound gets through there?

If you are installing from the desktop/live CD version, then try installing from the ALTERNATE (texted based) CD version.

In Windows it's Control Panel|Sounds an Audio under the audio tab

Linux MCE is based on kubuntu 7.10
They report it as working.

Look here:

You should find the solution there.
