Hi, today I was just looking at wikipedia, and searched up ubuntu, as we all know there is also Kubuntu and Xubuntu, well what I didnt know is that they were called that way because of there desktop environments;

Kubuntu (K) has the KDE desktop
Xubuntu (X) has the XFCE desktop
Ubuntu as GNOME

so i was wandering if i could have KDE and XFCE on Ubuntu, if yes how.

I also wanted to know weather i could switch between them without rebooting, or without data loss.

Thx!

yes you can! :)

tutorial for installing KDE4 on a system running ubuntu 8.10:
http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/view/120/26/

its a similar process for XFCE

every time you login, just click "session options" (or whatever its called in the corner) to choose which desktop environment to use.

The only reason you had to add another repository was to get KDE4 instead of the default 3.5. To get xfce, all you have to do is sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop.
