How do you change the background color of the IDE to any other color??? (white is really hurting my eyes...)
I looked for it high and low , but couldn't find a solution.

thanks,

From their website documentation. this may help

http://wiki.netbeans.org/FaqCustomLaf

if nothing works you could try and set it to use GTK, after you have selected a theme like darklooks.

Hmm... http://www.google.ba/search?q=netbeans+change+background&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

At least 2-3 useful results among top 10.

Anyhow...

Tools->Options->Fonts & Colors

In the list on the left, 'default' should be selected.
On the right side, choose a color from the 'background' drop down.

Note that there are already few installed themes you can choose from, using 'profile' drop down, at the top of that window.

Also, you may want to click 'duplicate' first, to create your own theme and not change the profile you chose.

Funny, I just installed for a homework, and I was configuring the colors just now:

(Change Default background and hit ok, it lags a bit)

Btw, is there a way to add a theme to the thing? It looks terrible; huge menus, weird fades, horrible tabs.

Change L&F. Check the link bruno posted.

I agree about the menus. You can change button size by right clicking the toolbar and 'Small menu items' or smth like that. That won't help you with the menus, though :)

Great, the GTK theme is now running and fixed the menu size:

Nice.

But I've found that the GTK LAF doesn't work properly with Clearlooks. If the system theme is Clearlooks, then there are no menu borders and the left-side of the drop-down arrow on combo box controls have no border either. Murrine theme works well though.

I use murrine and works fine. My theme: Murrina Candido (http://www.cimitan.com/murrine/node/128).
