Pretty much the title says it all.
Compiz is not available for now. I want to have different wallpapers for each wallpaper. Is this possible with Ubuntu 8.10 at all?

Compiz should be available via the add/remove section from within the applications menu. You just need to add it and download it.
This and other progs like 'beryl' are the only ways of putting different wallpapers on each workspace - or so i believe :guitar:

If my memory's correct, KDE can have diffrent wallpapers on each workspace (no flame). for Gnome (default on ubuntu) we need to use extra programs.
Wallpapoz worked rather well bus doesn't seem to be developed any more. should be in the repo though, check synaptic. (I havn't got any of my Ubuntu boxes up and running for the moment so can't check !!)

Google summer code had a small prog for doing the same thing but I can't find a download anyware, here's the devs blog if you want to hunt around :

seen a few sugestions of wallpaper-tray but have never tried it, seems to be more of a change wallpaper after x seconds prog : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WallpaperTray
apart from that, google gives loads of replys but most of them end up with a big NO NOT POSSIBLE ...
well hope these links can help a bit, Im surrounded with windows at work so a bit hard to test anything, I'll let someone else get there hands dirty this time ^^

Why compiz is not available now? It is in synaptics and if you can enable it follow this thread and you can have different wall paper on each work space.

I'd use compiz, but for the time being, there seems to be a bit of an error with it failing to display the names of different workspaces correctly via hovering the mouse over the workspace switcher. With compiz disabled, the workspace switcher seems to function better. In particular, if you hover over say a workspace named "email" it says "Click here to go to email". This doesn't work correctly via compiz... in fact it doesn't appear to support custom naming of workspaces very well yet.
I'll have to play with the third party apps to see if there is one that will work. And if anyone has further suggestions without relying on Compiz, I'd be glad to see learn about them.

Wallpapoz doesn't appear to be in the repos and I'd rather prefer to find something that either is, or at least comes in a deb package.
Wallpaper-tray doesn't do much else than cycle wallpapers for all workspaces so it's not what I'm looking for either.
On the side, where in Compiz Config would I go to set unique wallpapers for each workspace (I'm only curious for myself; the person I'm doing this research for would prefer to not have compiz enabled so I'm still hunting for a solution for them).

Well it's been marked as in development for the jaunty release but I don't see it yet in the beta.

From the looks of the developers blog, it's ready to go. It'll be a nice feature to see implemented.

I used synaptic to install “ Gtweakui” then I can use the program to stop nautilus form drawing the desktop and let the compiz-fusion plugin “wallpaper” take over.
