Is there a simple editor to do basic edit functions on mpeg/flv files etc ?

I have tried avid-mux, kino etc but they look overloaded with functions and aimed at DVR recordings etc.

Basically I want something I could use that was as simple to understand as windows moviemaker for basic cutting etc

thanks. i installed both of them.

pitivi is the closest, but still not as 'dummy-friendly'. (e.g. i couldnt intuitively trim a few frames out)
openmovie, i couldn't find how to load an mpeg video into it.

thanks anyway

I just searched for "Open Movie Editor" in "add/remove..." programs of my Ubuntu Studio 9.04 beta computer. The search results showed that it was already installed. However the program does not appear in any start menu.

Going back to "add/remove..." I tried to uninstall Open Movie Player and got a "can't uninstall ...other programs depend on this one" message.

Try using KDEnlive (http://www.kdenlive.org/). I'm not sure it its in ubuntu repositories. But you can definately get it from http://debian-multimedia.org/
